Digital Video and IB Film

Supplies

For the Digital Video and IB Classes, you will need the following supplies:

Portable Storage Device- some of your assignments will be to watch a film, video clip, or podcast. You may use a USB thumb drive to transfer these files, or you

Optional:

We have school cameras that you will be able to check out and use for your projects. However, they will not always be available when you would like to use them most, and therefore you might want to consider purchasing your own camera. Here is what I recommend for different budgets:

High End: The Canon HV30 allows you to film at 24 fps, which creates a ‘film look’ not often seen in consumer model video cameras. It retails for about $700 USD.

Mid Range: The JVC GZ-MG555 is a camera I haven’t personally used, but it seems to have all the right features at the right price. It retails for about $400 USD.

Low End: The Canon ZR850 takes a decent enough picture in well lit settings (and you do plan on lighting well, right?). The in camera microphone is not very good though - you’ll need to use an external microphone or record your audio separately. It retails for about $185 USD.

Other Options:

Alas, I have only sampled a few of the many cameras available for your filming enjoyment. However, Camcorderinfo.com has an excellent Ratings Page if you want to find the camera that fits your specific needs. For this class, you will want to be sure that the camera you purchase has firewire connectivity, and an external mic jack. Feel free to discuss with me in person or over email any other questions or considerations in choosing a camera.

The prices above are the current “low price” listed on Camcorderinfo.com. I do not guarantee that price... or anything else about the cameras for that matter.
